South African rap sensation Nasty C has shared his personal journey of battling alcohol addiction and the reasons behind his decision to quit drinking.
The ‘Send Me Away’ star revealed that he had developed a habit of consuming alcohol daily, whether at the studio, restaurants, or performances, until he finally decided to walk away from it.
According to him, the turning point came when he realized the long-term effect alcohol could have on his appearance. The 28-year-old explained that in South Africa, there is a common belief that heavy drinking makes a person look a decade older than their actual age.
In a candid conversation with British-Nigerian media personality Madame Joyce, Nasty C opened up, saying,
“I was addicted to alcohol. I was drinking every night. Everytime I go to the studio, restaurant, I drink. Everytime I perform, I drink.
“Also, my tolerance when it comes to alcohol was very high, too. When I drink alcohol with friends, I would be the last one to be intoxicated. And I feel it’s a bad thing because you never know when something is going wrong until it’s too late. I got off the vodka a little bit but I was drinking everything else. Whisky, cognac, tequila, rum – I was drinking everything.
“I gave up alcohol because I don’t want to get a ‘phuza face.’ There’s a thing in South Africa we call a ‘phuza face’ – when you age really quickly because you drink a lot of alcohol, when you start looking 10 years older than you actually are.”
Through his honesty, Nasty C hopes his experience serves as a reminder of the hidden costs of alcohol abuse and the importance of prioritizing health and self-awareness.
