Rapper and music executive Olamide has opened up on the reason he signed Afrobeats sensation Asake to his record label, YBNL Nation.
Speaking in a recent interview with Adesope Live, the 36-year-old said he was immediately drawn to Asake’s originality and work ethic.
Why Olamide Chose Asake
“I did not know he was going to go that wild but I knew Asake was one of one. From the sound and everything. I have never heard anything close to that before. His authenticity and his craftsmanship,” Olamide said.
He further praised Asake’s dedication:
“Asake is not the dude you try and convince to put in effort because he is already putting efforts. That is why I respect him so much. And I thought it would be a nice thing for us to partner.”
Olamide’s Philosophy on Managing Artistes
The YBNL boss stressed that he avoids putting pressure on artistes under his label, instead encouraging them to focus on making timeless music.
“Honestly, I do not put such pressure on my guys. I just tell them to make beautiful music. If it is awesome, it is going to fly. It might not fly now, but maybe in 10 years, 20 years. We are still seeing that in real life. My songs from 10 years ago that didn’t pop then, but we knew it was good music,” he explained.
Asake’s Journey With YBNL
Asake signed with YBNL in February 2022 and released his debut EP Ololade Asake, which featured hit singles Omo Ope and Sungba. He later dropped his record-breaking debut album Mr. Money With The Vibe, cementing his place as one of Afrobeats’ fastest-rising stars.
In February 2025, Asake launched his own label, Giran Republic, signaling a new chapter in his career.
Contract Controversy
Entertainment lawyer Yemisi Falaye later revealed she had advised Asake against signing the YBNL deal because it allegedly assigned his rights in perpetuity. However, Asake, eager for the opportunity, went ahead with the contract. Reports suggest he later felt dissatisfied with the terms.
