Liverpool manager Arne Slot has dismissed claims that Victor Osimhen was a serious transfer target for the Premier League champions during the summer window.
The Nigerian striker was heavily linked with Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea before sealing a record-breaking move to Galatasaray.
Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League clash with Galatasaray on Tuesday, Slot clarified that the Reds’ summer transfer plans focused on Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike. The strategy followed the departure of Darwin Núñez to Saudi Arabia and the tragic death of Diogo Jota.
When asked directly if Osimhen had been considered, Slot explained:
“We have added two number nines [Isak and Ekitike]. Unfortunately, it’s not the right word I should use because of an enormous tragedy that happened with Diogo Jota. In the end, we had to bring in two number nines. But it was always clear to us that from the start [of the summer window] we wanted to bring in these two [Isak and Ekitike] if we needed to.”
Osimhen, meanwhile, is expected to face his former suitors when Galatasaray meet Liverpool at Anfield.
