Super Falcons forward, Ifeoma Onumonu, has officially announced her retirement from professional football after an illustrious career spanning more than a decade across the United States, France, and Nigeria.
The 31-year-old footballer made the announcement on Saturday through an emotional post on her Instagram page, describing the decision as a “natural conclusion” to a lifelong passion that began when she was just eight years old.
“It is with a heart full of gratitude that I bid farewell to my playing career on the pitch,” Onumonu wrote. “From my first team, Magic, to the international stage, football has been a lifelong love story for me.”
Reflecting on her journey, she said the joy she felt running freely on the field as a child carried her through more than 22 years in the sport.
Throughout her career, Onumonu has achieved remarkable success at both club and international levels.
She won the NWSL Championship in the United States, represented Nigeria’s Super Falcons at the Olympics, and featured in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Most recently, she was part of the Nigerian team that clinched a record 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco in 2025.
Born in California to a Nigerian father, Onumonu started her football journey at the University of California, Berkeley, where she starred for the California Golden Bears. She entered the professional scene when the Boston Breakers selected her with the 8th overall pick in the 2017 NWSL College Draft.
After the Breakers folded, she had stints with Portland Thorns, Reign FC, and NJ/NY Gotham FC, where she became a key player and earned a spot in the 2021 NWSL Best XI Second Team. In 2023, she joined Utah Royals before moving to Montpellier HSC in France in 2024.
Beyond the pitch, Onumonu also appeared in The Offseason, a reality TV series documenting the lives of NWSL players as they prepared for a new season.
In her retirement statement, she made it clear that her love for the game endures:
“This is not a goodbye to football, but a new beginning. I’m excited to explore opportunities off the pitch, using the lessons and values I’ve learned through the years.”
She expressed heartfelt gratitude to her teammates, coaches, fans, and family, saying their support helped shape both her career and her character.
As Ifeoma Onumonu closes one chapter of her football journey, she leaves behind a legacy of hard work, determination, and pride in representing Nigeria on the global stage.
