A National Commissioner at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), May Agbamuche-Mbu, has officially assumed duty as the Acting Chairman of the Commission.
Her appointment follows the formal handover by Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who has proceeded on terminal leave ahead of the expiration of his tenure.
The announcement was made on Tuesday at the INEC headquarters in Abuja during a stakeholders’ meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).
Agbamuche-Mbu, who represents Delta, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States at the Commission, will oversee INEC’s affairs in an acting capacity until a substantive chairman is appointed.
Professor Yakubu, who has served as INEC Chairman since 2015, is Nigeria’s first electoral chief to be reappointed for a second term.
