Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy has once again sparked conversation across the continent after declaring that, aside from Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, no other African artist is greater than him.
The ‘Last Last’ hitmaker made the bold claim during a recent livestream session with popular Australian streamer Playboymax, confidently asserting his place in the hierarchy of African music legends.
“He [Fela Kuti] is the king. He is the only one [African artist] who is greater than me. He is the only one,” Burna Boy stated.
The statement immediately went viral, drawing mixed reactions from fans and music lovers. While some praised Burna Boy’s confidence and undeniable global success, others accused him of being overly boastful and disrespectful to other African icons who paved the way.
Still, Burna Boy’s impact on the global stage is undeniable. The self-proclaimed “African Giant” has become one of the most decorated and internationally recognized African artists, with multiple Grammy nominations, sold-out world tours, and chart-topping albums that continue to elevate Afrobeats on the world map.
However, his latest declaration reignites the long-standing debate over who deserves the title of the greatest African artist of all time — a conversation that often includes names like Fela Kuti, Angelique Kidjo, Youssou N’Dour, Wizkid, Davido, and 2Baba.
