Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo may miss the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a red card he received during Portugal’s 2–0 loss to the Republic of Ireland on Thursday.
The 40-year-old forward was first issued a yellow card in the 61st minute for elbowing defender Dara O’Shea, but after a VAR review, the referee upgraded the offence to a straight red — the first of Ronaldo’s international career in 226 appearances for Portugal.
Under FIFA’s disciplinary regulations, a red card for violent conduct carries a mandatory one-match suspension in competitive fixtures. However, the rules also provide that incidents involving assault — including elbowing — can result in a minimum three-match ban or a suspension for an “appropriate period of time,” depending on the severity.
Importantly, any suspension must be served during competitive games, meaning Ronaldo cannot serve the ban during pre-World Cup friendlies.
This development could see the Portuguese star unavailable for at least the opening game of the 2026 tournament — and potentially more if FIFA imposes an extended ban.
