Juliana Olayode Opens Up About Three-Year Battle With Depression and Suicidal Thoughts

Nollywood actress Juliana Olayode has spoken candidly about a prolonged struggle with depression that lasted nearly three years, revealing that she battled suicidal thoughts while continuing to appear strong in public.

The 30-year-old actress, widely known for her role as Toyosi in the popular television series Jenifa’s Diary, shared her experience in an emotional post on her Instagram page on Thursday. According to her, the period was one of deep internal pain, despite maintaining a normal public appearance.

“I was depressed and suicidal for almost three years. Of course, I showed up every day, as if I wasn’t struggling or dying inside,” she wrote.

Juliana explained that depression affected her both emotionally and physically, significantly altering her perception of life and mental health.

She noted that many people who struggle with suicidal thoughts often suffer in silence and are widely misunderstood.

“If you have never been suicidal, you might think that those who take their life are selfish, whereas to them, it’s their only means of escape,” she added.

The actress disclosed that her recovery involved seeking professional help through therapy, alongside a renewed reliance on her faith. While acknowledging the importance of therapy, she emphasized spirituality as a crucial part of her healing journey.

“Therapy is great. I went to therapy too… but sometimes you need to return to your Maker for the perfect fix… It’s FREE,” she wrote.

Expressing gratitude for her recovery, Juliana encouraged others facing similar struggles not to give up, reminding them that difficult moments do not last forever.

“It is not the end! Don’t listen to that dark voice in your head. The sun will rise again,” she said.

Juliana Olayode has been active in the Nigerian entertainment industry for over a decade and has appeared in several films and television projects beyond Jenifa’s Diary.

Her disclosure has since sparked conversations online about mental health awareness, healing, and the importance of seeking help.
