Former United States President Barack Obama has included songs by Nigerian artistes Olamide, Asake, and Burna Boy on his list of favourite songs for 2025, further highlighting the growing global influence of Afrobeats.
Obama shared the playlist on his official X page as part of his annual tradition of releasing his favourite books, films, and music at the end of the year.
Among the Nigerian tracks selected is ‘99’ by Olamide, which features Asake, Seyi Vibez, Young Jonn and British singer Daecolm. Also included is ‘TaTaTa’ by Burna Boy featuring American rapper Travis Scott.
“As 2025 comes to a close, I’m continuing a tradition that I started during my time in the White House: sharing my annual lists of favourite books, movies, and music,” Obama wrote. “I hope you find something new to enjoy and please send any recommendations for me to check out.”
‘99’ was released in June as one of the lead singles from Olamide’s forthcoming album, while ‘TaTaTa’ appeared earlier in the year as part of Burna Boy’s latest body of work.
The 2025 list also features Obongjayar, a Nigerian-born UK-based singer, further strengthening Nigeria’s representation on the former president’s playlist.
Obama’s annual music list has become a global cultural talking point, frequently spotlighting African sounds. In previous years, Nigerian artistes such as Tems, Rema, Ayra Starr and Burna Boy have also earned spots on his selections.
Other artists featured on the 2025 list include Kendrick Lamar, SZA, Drake, Lady Gaga, BLACKPINK, and Olivia Dean, reflecting a broad mix of genres and international influences.
