Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has secured the release of Seun, a young man who was arrested in Lagos following an online dispute with influencer Alabi Lawrence.
Seun’s arrest reportedly stemmed from alleged taunts made during a social media exchange, which were said to reference Lawrence’s wife’s fertility struggles. The incident sparked public debate over the proportionality of the police action.
Adeyanju shared photographs showing Seun reunited with his parents, describing the emotional toll the arrest had on the family. According to him, the parents were deeply distressed by the experience.
“Just secured the release of Lawrence’s victim, Seun, from the police station in Lagos. Seun’s mum and dad in the picture were traumatized by the arrest,” Adeyanju wrote.
His intervention has drawn widespread praise on social media, with many Nigerians commending his swift action and criticizing what they described as a “disproportionate” response by law enforcement to an online dispute.
The development has also renewed conversations around freedom of expression, cyber disputes, and the appropriate use of police powers in handling social media-related conflicts.
