Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has said Liverpool should not be written off in the Premier League title race this season, insisting the Reds remain capable of mounting a serious challenge.
Speaking on his BBC podcast, Rooney admitted that Arsenal and Manchester City currently look best placed to pull clear at the top of the table, but stressed that Liverpool are still very much in the conversation.
“It looks like Arsenal and Man City are going to be the two to break away at the top of the Premier League now,” Rooney said. “Liverpool as well though — if they get a run of form and win a few games, you never rule them out.”
He added that strong backing from the fans could play a key role in Liverpool’s push. “If they get that support behind them, they can have a say,” he noted.
While acknowledging the impressive performances of other sides this season, Rooney maintained that the title battle will likely be settled by the league’s traditional heavyweights.
“I wouldn’t rule Liverpool out. But Arsenal and City are the two I think will break away. Aston Villa have done fantastically, but I think it will be one of the top two.”
