Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has played down concerns over Victor Osimhen’s reaction after being substituted during Nigeria’s 2–1 victory over Tanzania in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
Nigeria secured the win on Tuesday through goals from Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman, but late drama followed when head coach Eric Chelle replaced Osimhen with Paul Onuachu shortly before the final whistle.
The Galatasaray striker appeared visibly frustrated as he left the pitch, exchanging words with Chelle before taking his seat on the bench, sparking speculation of tension within the team.
Addressing the incident during his post-match press conference, Ndidi dismissed any talk of disagreement, explaining that Osimhen’s reaction was driven by his passion and desire to help the team.
“I didn’t see that, but it is what it is. Osimhen is a big player, he wants to do the best for the team, maybe a bit frustrated,” Ndidi said.
“It is normal, we are human beings. Maybe he felt the game didn’t go his way because he was trying for the team. That’s the kind of player he is, we needed him.
“I think Osimhen is putting too much pressure on himself. I’m going to speak to him — he wants to win.”
The Super Eagles’ victory further strengthens their AFCON qualification hopes as they continue their campaign with renewed confidence.
