The Nigerian government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has confirmed that the United States carried out military air strikes on terrorist hideouts in Nigeria’s North-West region on Thursday.

In a press release, the ministry stated that the operation was a result of structured security cooperation and intelligence collaboration between Nigeria and the United States, stressing that the strikes were precise and targeted criminal enclaves.

According to the government, the joint action reflects ongoing efforts to rid the country of violent extremists whose activities undermine national security and values.

“Cooperation between Nigeria and the US has led to precision hits on terrorist targets in Nigeria by air strikes in the North West,” the statement said.

It explained that the collaboration involves intelligence sharing, strategic coordination and other support measures carried out in line with international law, respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and shared commitments to regional and global security.

The government reiterated that all counter-terrorism operations prioritise the protection of civilian lives, national unity and the rights of all citizens, regardless of religion or ethnicity.

“Terrorist violence in any form, whether directed at Christians, Muslims, or other communities, remains an affront to Nigeria’s values and to international peace and security,” the ministry noted.

It added that Nigeria would continue working closely with international partners to dismantle terrorist networks, disrupt their funding and logistics, prevent cross-border threats, and strengthen domestic security and intelligence capacity.
