Amanda Azubuike Makes History as First Nigerian Woman to Become a U.S. Army Brigadier General

Amanda Azubuike has made history as the first Nigerian woman to attain the rank of Brigadier General in the United States Army, marking a significant milestone for women and people of African descent in global military leadership.

At 57, Brigadier General Azubuike’s career stands as a powerful example of perseverance, excellence, and service.

Born in London to Nigerian parents of Igbo heritage and a Zimbabwean mother, she spent her early life moving across continents.

Her father moved from Nigeria to the United Kingdom to study law, where he met her mother, who was training to be a nurse.

Following her parents’ separation, Azubuike and her sister moved to the United States with their mother. She later became a U.S. citizen in April 1989, a turning point that paved the way for her military career.

With over 30 years of service in the U.S. Army, Azubuike has held several high-level leadership and strategic roles, including:

  • Deputy Commanding Officer, U.S. Army Cadet Command

  • Chief of Public Affairs, U.S. Southern Command

  • Senior Military Adviser at the Pentagon

Her elevation to the rank of Brigadier General crowns decades of distinguished service and makes her the first Nigerian woman to achieve this feat in the U.S. military. Her achievement continues to inspire women—particularly Black women—across the world to pursue leadership roles in fields traditionally dominated by men.
