‘You allowed social media distract you’ – Bovi slams Super Eagles after AFCON exit

Nigerian comedian and actor Bovi Ugboma has criticised Super Eagles players following their Africa Cup of Nations semi-final defeat to hosts Morocco on Wednesday.

Nigeria’s hopes of winning a fourth AFCON title ended after a 4–2 loss on penalties in Rabat. Reacting in a video broadcast, Bovi accused the players of being distracted by social media attention and fans’ praise, while also pointing to a lack of passion linked to unpaid match bonuses.

According to him, players should not accept national team call-ups if they are not fully committed to representing the country.

“Football is the only thing that unites Nigeria,” Bovi said. “If you are playing for Nigeria, regardless of how the NFF treats you, understand that you have the potential to unite Nigerians.”

While he said he forgave Samuel Chukwueze for missing a penalty, Bovi stressed that the players must recognise the responsibility they carry. He warned against prioritising personal glory over collective success, noting that such an approach often backfires.

Bovi also urged players to look beyond financial issues, adding that social media attention has negatively affected focus in recent tournaments.

“Don’t come to the Super Eagles if you know you are not ready to give everything for the nation,” he said, insisting that fans support players for their performances, not their personalities.
