Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has shut down speculations that he may defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), insisting that he remains firmly rooted in the opposition party despite recent political realignments.
Makinde made the clarification after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu, where he was asked about reports of some PDP governors and leaders defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Responding directly to the rumours, the governor said he had no plans to leave the PDP.
“I’m comfortable in the PDP,” Makinde stated.
He, however, acknowledged that there are moments when Nigeria’s challenges require cooperation beyond party lines, stressing the importance of a bipartisan approach in matters of national interest.
“We may have issues in this country where a bipartisan approach is required. It shouldn’t be a situation where only the APC is talking or only the PDP is talking. We must look at what puts our best foot forward in the interest of our nation,” he said.
Makinde added that when critical national issues are involved, collaboration across political divides becomes necessary.
“At that point, you need everybody on board,” he noted.
His comments suggest openness to bipartisan engagement at the federal level, while firmly rejecting any immediate move to the APC and reaffirming his loyalty to the PDP.
CREEBHILLS had earlier reported that Governor Makinde met with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday. His visit came shortly after Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who recently defected from the PDP to the APC, was also seen at the State House.
