Alonso was recently sacked by Real Madrid and subsequently replaced by Álvaro Arbeloa. Prior to his spell at the Bernabéu, he enjoyed a highly successful managerial stint with Bayer Leverkusen, where he earned widespread praise for his tactical acumen in the Bundesliga.

The former Spain international is no stranger to Anfield, having played for Liverpool during his professional career, a factor that could influence his decision should talks progress further.

Liverpool are currently managed by Arne Slot, but the Dutchman is believed to be under mounting pressure due to the club’s inconsistent performances this season. Slot’s side sit fourth on the Premier League table and are effectively out of the title race, despite winning the league last season.

It remains to be seen whether Alonso will accept the opportunity to return to Anfield—this time from the dugout—but Liverpool’s early contact signals that the club may already be considering alternatives ahead of the new season.
