Kylian Mbappé kept his composure deep into stoppage time to convert a 100th-minute penalty, handing Real Madrid a dramatic 2-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano in a tense La Liga derby on Sunday.

The late win cut FC Barcelona’s lead at the top of the table to just one point, after the Catalans defeated Elche on Saturday.

Madrid made a strong start at the Santiago Bernabéu, with Vinicius Junior opening the scoring early. However, concern quickly followed as Jude Bellingham was forced off with an apparent hamstring injury, leaving the England international in visible pain.

Rayo responded after the break, with Jorge de Frutos levelling the score early in the second half, a goal that intensified frustration among the home supporters.

The balance of the game shifted when Pathe Ciss was sent off, giving Madrid a numerical advantage. Despite sustained pressure, Los Blancos struggled to find a breakthrough until Mbappé stepped up in the dying moments, calmly slotting home from the spot for his 22nd La Liga goal of the season.

Rayo’s resistance finally cracked, with Pep Chavarria also shown a red card late on. The visitors, sitting 17th, pushed Madrid all the way before eventually falling short.

Speaking after the match, Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa praised his side’s resilience.

“It was a victory with a lot of heart, a lot of soul. The Bernabéu pushed us on against a team that always creates a lot of problems for us,” he told Real Madrid TV.

The atmosphere inside the stadium remained tense throughout the night, coming days after Madrid’s midweek defeat to SL Benfica, which sent them into the Champions League play-off round. Despite calls from Arbeloa and Mbappé for patience, sections of the crowd again voiced their displeasure.

Former Barcelona winger Ilias Akhomach nearly added to Madrid’s woes early on, firing narrowly wide, while goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was kept alert under pressure.

In the end, Mbappé’s late coolness proved decisive, keeping Real Madrid firmly in the title race as the La Liga season edges toward its decisive phase.
