NFL side the New England Patriots are reportedly set to release wide receiver Stefon Diggs.
According to ESPN, Diggs, 32, was informed by team officials that he would be released on Wednesday, March 11. The move comes less than a year after he signed a three-year, $63.5 million contract with the AFC champions.
Reacting to the development, Diggs wrote on his Instagram Stories: “THANK YOU for a hell of a year. We family forever.”
The news follows weeks of off-field controversy surrounding the player. Diggs recently pleaded not guilty to charges of felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery. His tenure with the Patriots was marked by several incidents, including a viral yacht video last May and an arrest in December after a woman accused him of slapping and choking her.
Off the field, his relationship with rapper Cardi B — with whom he welcomed a baby in November — also ended shortly before the Patriots’ Super Bowl appearance last month.
On the field, Diggs recorded 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns in what was his 11th NFL season and first with the Patriots.
Reports indicate that salary cap considerations may have influenced the decision. His cap charge was set to increase significantly, and he was due additional guaranteed money if he remained on the roster beyond next week.
Speaking at the NFL Combine, Patriots coach Mike Vrabel praised Diggs’ professionalism during his recovery from a torn ACL in 2024.
“He worked extremely hard in the time that he was rehabbing from the knee,” Vrabel said. “I think he was just a really good presence each and every week.”
The Patriots are yet to issue an official statement confirming the release.
