Nigerian Afrobeats star Ayra Starr has expressed admiration for Nigerian men, describing them as supportive and confident partners.
The singer made the remarks during a recent appearance on Way Up with Angela Yee, where she compared Nigerian men to men from New York City.
According to Starr, Nigerian men are known for taking care of their partners and being supportive in relationships.
“Nigerian men love to take care of their women. They are very supportive of their wife or girlfriend,” she said.
“They are very, very confident, so it is almost the same thing as New York men. But you know, men are men. A man is a man still. It is a universal thing.”
Her comments come months after the singer faced backlash on social media from some Nigerian men who criticised what they described as a mismatch between her feminist advocacy online and her behaviour offline.
Critics pointed to her enthusiastic reaction to meeting American singer Chris Brown and a dance video she shared to a song by Naira Marley.
Ayra Starr has also previously faced criticism over her fashion choices. In 2023, the singer responded to critics by saying they were neither her “pastor” nor her “mother.”
