Arsenal reclaimed top spot in the Premier League after grinding out a tense 1 nil win over Newcastle United, moving three points clear of Manchester City in the title race.
The decisive moment came early when Eberechi Eze struck in the ninth minute, finishing from the edge of the box after a clever short corner routine to hand the Gunners a crucial lead.
The goal proved enough to separate both sides, but it was far from a comfortable afternoon for Mikel Arteta’s men, who had to dig deep to protect the advantage and return to the summit after briefly being displaced by Manchester City.
City had moved above Arsenal following their win over Burnley on Wednesday, putting pressure on the Gunners to respond.
They did just that, though concern emerged over injuries after both Eze and Kai Havertz were forced off.
Eze, who scored the winner, was substituted in the second half after going down off the ball, sparking fears of a possible setback.
Havertz had earlier been withdrawn in the first half, adding to worries over Arsenal’s fitness situation at a critical stage of the season.
However, Arteta sought to calm nerves after the match, downplaying both issues.
“They are muscular niggles. We don’t think it’s too much,” the Arsenal boss said.
Eze also reportedly suggested his substitution was only precautionary, offering further reassurance.
Despite the early breakthrough, Arsenal were made to work hard against a stubborn Newcastle side, with the narrow win keeping them in control of the title race.
With the victory, the Gunners now sit three points ahead of City, sending another strong statement in what is becoming an increasingly tense battle for the Premier League crown.
