“‘Beggie Beggie’ Came From A Bus Ride” — Ayra Starr Reveals Inspiration Behind Hit Song

Ayra Starr Reveals Inspiration Behind Hit Song

Afrobeats singer Ayra Starr has revealed that her song Beggie Beggie was inspired by a random experience she had while riding a public bus home.

Speaking during an appearance on the Creatorium Podcast, the Mavin Records artiste explained that the idea for the song came after she overheard a woman describing someone begging for money as “beggie beggie.”

According to the singer, the phrase immediately stayed in her mind and later became part of the creative inspiration behind the track.

Ayra Starr also opened up about how her songwriting process has evolved over the years, noting that she no longer relies primarily on emotion when creating music.

“It depends on what I am going for,” she said.

“Lately, for me, creating just starts with trying. Not emotion, just trying, then we see where it takes us.”

She explained that inspiration can begin from chords, sounds, samples, or simply experimenting with something different and fun.

The singer further spoke about the realities behind a successful music career, stressing that consistency, discipline, and passion are necessary despite the glamorous image many people see online.

“You have to have a certain type of love and passion for what you do to be able to do this,” Ayra stated.

“The glamour is the glamour, but behind the scenes, it’s a lot of work.”

She added that even after weeks of preparation and rehearsals, unexpected technical issues can still affect performances on stage.

Beggie appeared on Ayra Starr’s debut album, 19 & Dangerous, released in 2021 under Mavin Records.

The project also featured successful songs such as Bloody Samaritan and Away, which helped establish her as one of the leading young voices in Afrobeats.
