Nigerian actress and filmmaker Bolaji Ogunmola is not backing down from conversations surrounding the newly announced sequel to Ajosepo, as anticipation continues to build ahead of the movie’s cinema release.
The actress recently addressed fans who questioned her decision to create Ajosepo 2, following the success of the original family comedy-drama that premiered in 2024.
Bolaji, who also serves as one of the producers behind the project, reacted publicly on her X account shortly after the exclusive premiere of the sequel held at IMAX Lekki on Sunday night.
“To the people asking why we made a sequel for AJOSEPO… JUST watch it and find out. We are outside from May 28,” she wrote.
Her response immediately sparked fresh conversations online, with many movie lovers debating whether the first instalment truly needed a continuation or if the sequel could successfully expand the story without losing the charm that made audiences connect with the original film.
The first Ajosepo movie gained attention for its relatable storytelling, family-centered themes, and blend of humor and emotional tension.
The film followed the journey of a young couple, Dapo and Tani, whose wedding plans became increasingly complicated due to family interference, hidden secrets, and cultural expectations.
At its core, the movie explored themes familiar to many Nigerian families, including love, pressure to marry, generational conflicts, and the often chaotic dynamics that surface during wedding preparations.
Directed by Kayode Kasum, the original production featured a strong ensemble cast including Timini Egbuson, Mike Afolarin, Tomike Adeoye, Mercy Aigbe, Muyiwa Ademola, Ronke Oshodi Oke, Lizzy Jay, alongside Bolaji Ogunmola herself.
Produced under Film Trybe, the movie became one of the notable Nigerian family dramas that resonated with audiences both in cinemas and online discussions.
Now, expectations for Ajosepo 2 appear even higher.
Although the filmmakers have not fully disclosed the sequel’s complete storyline or final cast details, early reactions from the premiere suggest the movie will continue directly from the unresolved events of the first instalment. Fans are already speculating about which family tensions, hidden secrets, or relationship twists could take centre stage in the continuation.
Sequels in Nollywood have often received mixed reactions from audiences. While some viewers welcome the opportunity to revisit beloved characters and storylines, others worry that follow-up productions can match the originality and emotional depth of the first film.
Bolaji’s confident response, however, suggests the filmmakers believe the sequel has enough substance to justify its return to the big screen.
The growing conversation around Ajosepo 2 also reflects Nollywood’s growing confidence in building franchises and long-running cinematic universes. This strategy has become more common as the industry continues to expand commercially.
With the film scheduled for release on May 28, movie lovers will soon get the chance to decide whether Ajosepo 2 lives up to the expectations created by its predecessor and the online buzz surrounding its premiere.
