Just months after securing one of the most talked-about transfers of the winter window, Atlético Madrid are reportedly prepared to part ways with Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman if the right offer arrives this summer.
The Spanish giants are said to be open to negotiations for a fee in the region of €60 million, a move that could spark a fierce transfer battle involving some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Lookman’s future has suddenly become one of the hottest talking points ahead of the summer transfer window despite only joining Atlético earlier this year.
The Super Eagles star completed a move from Atalanta BC in February in a deal reportedly worth around €35 million plus add-ons, signing a long-term contract that runs until 2030.
At the time, the transfer was viewed as a major statement from Atlético as they looked to strengthen their attacking options. However, reports emerging from Spain suggest the relationship may not be progressing as smoothly as expected.
Although Lookman contributed important goals in domestic and European competitions, sources indicate he has struggled to fully adapt to the intense tactical demands imposed by manager Diego Simeone.
Known for his disciplined defensive structure and relentless work ethic, Simeone reportedly wants players who fit seamlessly into his system, and Atlético are now reportedly considering significant changes as part of a wider squad overhaul.
The possibility of Lookman becoming available has immediately attracted interest from clubs across Europe, particularly in England, where the Nigerian international previously built his reputation.
Among the clubs closely monitoring the situation is Arsenal F.C.
Manager Mikel Arteta is believed to be a long-time admirer of Lookman’s versatility, pace, and ability to operate across multiple attacking positions.
With Arsenal continuing their search for additional firepower, the former Atalanta star could fit perfectly into Arteta’s dynamic attacking setup.
Liverpool F.C. have also been linked with the winger.
The Merseyside club reportedly tracked Lookman during his impressive spell in Italy, where he established himself as one of Europe’s most dangerous forwards. His high pressing intensity, direct running, and eye for goal are qualities that have long appealed to Liverpool’s recruitment team.
Meanwhile, Manchester United F.C. are also said to be keeping a close watch on developments.
United are expected to strengthen their attacking options this summer after another inconsistent campaign in front of goal, and Lookman’s proven experience in both the Premier League and European competitions makes him an attractive target.
Interest is not limited to England.
Turkish giants Fenerbahçe S.K. are reportedly ready to revisit their pursuit after narrowly missing out on his signature during the January transfer window.
French champions Paris Saint-Germain F.C. have also been linked, while Italian heavyweights Inter Milan and Juventus F.C. remain admirers of the Nigerian forward.
However, Atlético’s reported €60 million valuation, coupled with Lookman’s salary demands, could make negotiations challenging for several interested clubs.
Lookman’s stock remains high following his remarkable spell in Bergamo, where he became a fan favourite and one of Atalanta’s most influential players.
The 28-year-old famously etched his name into European football history by scoring a stunning hat-trick in the Europa League final, helping Atalanta secure the club’s first major European trophy.
During his time in Italy, he scored 55 goals and established himself as one of Africa’s most effective attacking players.
Having previously represented Charlton Athletic F.C., Everton F.C., Fulham F.C., and Leicester City F.C., a return to English football would not be unfamiliar territory for the Nigerian star.
As the summer transfer window approaches, Lookman’s future is rapidly becoming one of the most intriguing stories to watch. If Atlético Madrid decides to move him on, there is unlikely to be a shortage of elite clubs ready to compete for his signature.
