Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has officially been named the new head coach of the Germany national team, bringing his break from frontline management to an end.
Klopp succeeds Julian Nagelsmann, who stepped down after Germany’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 59-year-old had been serving as Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull since leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 season.
However, he has now accepted the opportunity to lead his home country, marking his first managerial role since departing Anfield.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the appointment with his trademark phrase:
“Here we go!”
indicating that the agreement had been completed.
Germany’s World Cup campaign came to an unexpected end in the Round of 16, where they suffered a shock penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay.
The result was particularly historic, marking Germany’s first-ever defeat in a FIFA World Cup penalty shootout.
Following the elimination, Nagelsmann resigned as head coach.
Speaking to Magenta TV, Klopp revealed that discussions over the Germany job progressed quickly before he agreed to take charge of the four-time world champions.
His appointment signals the beginning of a new era for the national team as Germany begins preparations for its next major international competitions.
Widely regarded as one of football’s top managers, Klopp enjoyed immense success during his time at Liverpool, winning the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and Community Shield.
Germany will now hope Klopp can bring the same winning mentality to the national side as they seek to bounce back from another disappointing World Cup campaign.
