Argentina captain Lionel Messi has publicly dismissed rumours linking him romantically with Argentine television journalist Sofi Martinez, using a light-hearted exchange after his country’s FIFA World Cup victory to put the speculation to rest.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner addressed the rumours following Argentina’s 3-2 extra-time victory over Cape Verde in the Round of 32 in Miami.
After the match, Messi approached Martinez, who works for Argentine broadcaster Telefe, in the mixed zone to greet her and briefly discuss Argentina’s performance.
Following a customary hug and kiss on the cheek, the Inter Miami star jokingly referenced the online speculation surrounding their interactions.
According to German outlet Bild, Messi said:
“When I look at you, they ask why I’m looking at you. And when I greet you, they ask why I’m greeting you.”
His remarks drew laughter from those present and appeared to mock the persistent rumours circulating on social media.
Martinez immediately rejected the speculation, responding:
“These are all lies.”
She also thanked Messi for addressing the rumours publicly.
The journalist previously revealed that Messi’s wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, personally reached out to her amid the online speculation to offer reassurance and dismiss claims of jealousy.
According to Martinez, Antonela sent her a direct message saying:
“Sofi, don’t worry, ignore the nonsense.”
The message further fueled the view that neither Messi nor his family had taken the rumours seriously.
Speculation about Messi and Martinez first emerged during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, after several emotional post-match interviews between the football star and the reporter attracted widespread online attention.
The rumours resurfaced during the ongoing World Cup, prompting Messi to address them publicly for the first time.
The exchange has since gone viral on social media, with many fans praising both Messi and Martinez for calmly and humorously shutting down the rumours.
