“You removed my head from my picture” – Anita Joseph Faces Backlash After Being Accused Of AI-Swapping Her Face Onto Caramel Plug’s Photo

Anita Joseph Faces Backlash After Being Accused Of AI-Swapping Her Face Onto Caramel Plug's Photo

What started as a cryptic post about womanhood and survival has turned into one of the messier celebrity controversies to land on Nigerian timelines this week, and at its centre is an AI face swap that nobody is quite ready to let go of.

Content creator Ogechi Ukonu, better known as Caramel Plug, publicly called out Nollywood actress Anita Joseph after accusing her of lifting a birthday photoshoot image, using AI to remove Caramel’s face, inserting her own face, and posting the result on Instagram as though it were her own.

The photo in question was shared by Anita four days before Caramel discovered it, accompanied by the caption “A woman cannot submit and be in survival mode at the same time,” a line many read as part of Anita’s ongoing subtle commentary on MC Fish’s new girlfriend, Gbemi.

When Caramel eventually came across the post after returning to Instagram following a break, she was visibly stunned. Not just by the image itself, but reportedly by the fact that Anita was responding to comments beneath it as if the photo had always belonged to her, and allegedly deleting Caramel’s comments when she tried to address it directly.

“You don’t even follow me on any socials, we don’t know each other,” Caramel wrote. “Anita, you removed my head from my picture and inserted your head in it and POSTED IT PUBLICLY.”

She went further, sharing a video to back her claim, insisting the original photo was real and not AI-generated, and that the outfit featured in the image was hers.

Anita apologised, but the explanation she offered didn’t exactly cool things down. She blamed her “AI boy” for the mix-up, framing the whole incident as a mistake made by whoever handles her AI-generated content rather than a deliberate act on her part.

To some, it was a reasonable explanation given how normalised AI-generated imagery has become. To others, and to Caramel specifically, it missed the point entirely.

Caramel made clear she wasn’t ready to accept the apology on those terms. “She stole it,” she said, pushing back against the AI designer narrative.

Her follow-up response to Anita’s public apology was equally pointed. “I’m not your baby. I don’t really know you,” she wrote, signalling that whatever goodwill the apology was meant to generate hadn’t quite landed.

The reactions online split almost immediately. A section of social media felt Caramel’s continued frustration after a public apology had been issued was excessive, with some users suggesting she was prolonging the moment.

Others firmly backed her position, arguing that using someone’s image without consent and in a misleading way constitutes a genuine violation, regardless of who pressed the button. A few comments cut straight to the absurdity of the situation itself: “This one na proper your head, my body drama.”

The timing adds an extra layer to everything. Anita is already in the middle of her own soap opera involving MC Fish, his new relationship, and a very active Instagram comments section.

Posting a mysterious quote about womanhood and survival using what turned out to be someone else’s photo, in the middle of all that, is exactly the kind of detail that makes Nigerian social media so difficult to keep up with and so impossible to look away from.

Anita has apologised. Caramel hasn’t moved on. And the internet is very much still watching.
