WhatsApp Introduces iPad Account Creation, Adds Music Sharing and CarPlay Upgrades

WhatsApp has announced that users can now create an account directly on an iPad, eliminating the need first to link the app to an existing smartphone account.

The new feature, announced in a blog post on Wednesday, is part of Meta’s efforts to make WhatsApp more flexible across devices and better integrated with other platforms.

“WhatsApp should work wherever you do. That’s why we’ve been working with partners to make it fit seamlessly with the other apps you use and across your devices – so that WhatsApp can keep up with how you actually live,” the company said.

The update addresses one of the most requested features from iPad users. Since WhatsApp launched its iPad app in 2025, users have been required to connect it to a primary account on their phone using a QR code or one-time password.

With the latest update, users can now register directly through the iPad app. However, a phone number and a device capable of receiving the verification code are still required during the initial setup.

Once registration is complete, the iPad functions as a standalone WhatsApp device rather than a companion linked to a smartphone.

Meta also unveiled several new features across the platform.

Users can now share songs from Apple Music and Spotify directly to their WhatsApp Status, making it easier to post what they’re listening to. On the web and desktop versions, WhatsApp now allows users to highlight and annotate PDF documents without downloading them first.

For drivers, the messaging app has expanded its support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In addition to making calls and sending messages, users can now listen to incoming messages, reply using voice commands, view recent calls and access favourite contacts while driving.

The updates build on a series of recent additions to the platform. Earlier this year, WhatsApp introduced usernames, allowing people to connect without sharing their phone numbers, and later began letting users reserve their preferred usernames.

Meta also recently rolled out a subscription service for WhatsApp, offering premium features such as profile customization, enhanced reactions and additional Status insights.

The latest changes underscore Meta’s continued push to transform WhatsApp from a simple messaging app into a more feature-rich communication platform across mobile, desktop and in-car experiences.
