A few days after the UK government prevented students on study visas from bringing their relatives into the country, the Canadian government unveiled a new policy on Friday to speed the approval of family reunification applications.
Canada’s immigration minister, Sean Fraser, broke the news and stated that the country has introduced additional steps to facilitate family reunification.
According to sources, the new system will make it easier for recent immigrants’ spouses, children, and parents to relocate to Canada.
He further stated that 98% of applications for temporary residence visas (TRV) for spouses and children were accepted well in advance.
According to the minister of immigration, the new policy processes TRV requests for family members of citizens and permanent residents in less than 30 days by leveraging cutting-edge technology and analytics.
The new policy announced states that the new programme will grant open work permits to the spouse of applicants and their defendant children, regardless of whether they applied under the Family class as an overseas applicant, or as an applicant for a spouse or common-law partner in Canada.
The new measures listed
The new measures include:
- Faster temporary resident visa (TRV) processing times for spousal applicants
- New and dedicated processing tools for spousal TRV applicants
- A new open work permit for spousal and family class applicants
- Open work permit extensions for open work permit holders expiring between August 1st and the end of 2023
