Morocco Stun Netherlands on Penalties to Book World Cup Last-16 Clash With Canada

Morocco kept their FIFA World Cup dream alive in dramatic fashion after edging the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties following a gripping 1-1 draw after extra time in Monterrey.

The Atlas Lions showed remarkable resilience to come from behind, forcing extra time with a last-gasp equalizer before goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as the hero in the shootout to send Morocco into the Round of 16.

The victory sets up an intriguing knockout clash against Canada, with the two sides scheduled to meet in Houston on Saturday.

Bounou the hero as Morocco hold their nerve

The penalty shootout swung in Morocco’s favor when Bounou produced a decisive save to deny Crysencio Summerville, whose effort would have kept the Netherlands alive.

With the pressure firmly on, Ismael Saibari stepped forward and confidently buried the winning penalty, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Moroccan players and supporters.

Although Neil El Aynaoui had earlier hit the crossbar with Morocco’s opening penalty, the North Africans recovered brilliantly to complete an impressive comeback.

Gakpo’s emotional goal nearly seals Dutch victory

The Netherlands looked destined for the last 16 after Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock midway through the second half.

The Liverpool forward, who recently endured the heartbreaking loss of his and his partner’s unborn child, celebrated emotionally as teammates surrounded him in a lengthy embrace.

His goal came after substitute Wout Weghorst flicked on a long ball into the path of Summerville, whose cross found Gakpo for a close-range finish.

For much of the closing stages, the Dutch appeared to have done enough to secure victory.

Morocco strike when it mattered most

Just as Ronald Koeman’s side began to see the finish line, Morocco produced one final push.

Deep into stoppage time, Chemsdine Talbi delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area where an unmarked Issa Diop rose highest to power home a dramatic header, sending the contest into extra time and silencing the Dutch supporters.

The equalizer was no more than Morocco deserved after creating several dangerous opportunities throughout the match.

End-to-end battle thrills fans

The encounter was played at a relentless pace, with both teams producing moments of quality in a fiercely contested battle.

Morocco threatened first when El Aynaoui glanced an Achraf Hakimi corner toward goal, only for Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen to produce a superb reflex save.

Minutes later, Verbruggen was called into action again, tipping Hakimi’s powerful long-range effort over the crossbar.

The Dutch also had chances before halftime, with Micky van de Ven forcing Bounou into an excellent save from distance.

The match wasn’t without controversy, as Saibari escaped punishment after appearing to elbow Jan Paul van Hecke during a heated first half that saw referee Wilton Sampaio frequently called upon to calm tempers.

Morocco march on

Extra time continued at a frantic pace, with both sides searching for a winner.

Morocco nearly completed the turnaround when Soufiane Rahimi raced through on goal, only for Verbruggen to produce another outstanding save to keep the Netherlands alive.

However, the Dutch could not survive the penalty shootout, where Bounou once again showcased why he is regarded as one of the world’s finest goalkeepers.

With another famous World Cup victory secured, Morocco now turns its attention to Canada as the Atlas Lions continue their pursuit of another memorable run on football’s biggest stage.
