The inmates have elected Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti as the ‘General Overseer’ of his cell.
The musician is being held at the State Criminal, Investigations and Intelligence Department, SCIID, Panti, Yaba, Lagos, for allegedly attacking a police officer.
As an instrument of his office, he was claimed to have been given a copy of the Holy Bible. His nomination as the GO, however, was not without controversy, since the convicts originally rejected him.
In a viral video, Seun was accused of hitting a police officer on the Third Mainland bridge on May 13, prompting the Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Baba, to order his arrest. Seun, on the other hand, surrendered to police on Monday, escorted by his counsel, and was arraigned in a Sabo, Yaba Chief Magistrate Court on Tuesday, which ordered his remand.
Saturday According to Vanguard, Seun was escorted to the jail to join other suspected criminals after preliminary interrogations were completed. His first shock came from the gruff, deep baritone voice of the convict leader, who told him to stay standing.
A few minutes later, the convicts were claimed to have rejected him, causing a crisis inside the cell. The detainees were beating on their metal protective door, demanding that Seun be removed from the cell.
According to sources, as the detainees’ clamor grew, Seun began bargaining for calm to reign. That’s when he realized the uproar his presence generated, as well as his rejection by the convicts, drew little or no attention from the police guards.
At the time, he allegedly promised to provide them N25,000 and was told to deliver it immediately. He had to beg for the phone to call his wife, who swiftly delivered the money to their boss. The convicts eventually embraced him (Seun) and gave him a place to sit.
Vanguard also learned that Seun was so enraged by the events that he refused to consume the food given for him, even meals prepared by his wife. He went on a hunger strike for over a day and a half before ultimately starting to eat.
The convicts later crowned him General Overseer of the cell, and a bible was handed over to him as the drama’s climax. That is, he is currently leading the inmates in prayer sessions whenever the need arises, followed by a chorus of “GO, GO.”
