Mary Jane Blige (born January 11, 1971). She was born in Fordham Hospital in New York City’s Bronx neighborhood to nurse Cora and jazz musician Thomas Blige. She grew up in Richmond Hill, Georgia, where she sang in a Pentecostal church. She and her family then returned to New York, where they lived in the Schlobohm Housing Projects in Yonkers. After her father left the family in the mid-1970s, the family relied on her mother’s earnings as a nurse. Her father was a Vietnam War veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder and an alcohol problem.
