Lauren James, an England player competing in the 2023 Women’s World Cup, has apologized to Nigerian Michelle Alozie for her disrespectful behavior on the field of play.
During the game, England escaped a significant scare to defeat Nigeria 4-2 on penalties and go to a World Cup quarter-final against Colombia or Jamaica after a goalless stalemate.
Bethany England, Rachel Daly, Alex Greenwood, and Chloe Kelly all scored in Brisbane as England advanced despite Lauren James’ dismissal in normal time.
Georgia Stanway and Desire Oparanozie all missed penalties for their respective teams, while Michelle Alozie also missed for Nigeria, leaving England in command.
James was sent off for a reckless stamp with four minutes of the 90 remaining, planting her studs on the back of Alozie.
She was initially shown a yellow card but it was changed to a straight red after referee Melissa Borjas checked her pitch-side monitor on the recommendation of the VAR.
The action generated unpleasant reactions across the globe.
On Tuesday, Lauren James apologised to Nigeria’s Michelle Alozie for her red card the day before and has promised to learn from the experience.
