Senate President Godswill Akpabio has revealed his belief that divine intervention saved him from potential humiliation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as the 2023 elections approach.
Akpabio explained that he was summoned by the EFCC in relation to an unsubstantial petition, but the agency released a letter acknowledging his inability to attend.
He criticized the EFCC for prioritizing sensationalism over conducting thorough investigations.
Akpabio expressed his gratitude to God for guiding him through this situation and preventing any embarrassment before the upcoming elections.
The Senate also raised concerns about the EFCC’s methods of arrest, citing the example of Rochas Okorocha where the agency allegedly resorted Akpabio to breaking through rooftops to gain access.
He emphasized the need for proper investigations before arrests.
Akpabio reportedly faces a case involving the alleged misappropriation of N108.1 billion, based on a petition filed by an Abuja-based lawyer and activist, Leo Ekpenyong. While the EFCC detained Akpabio over alleged fraud, he has consistently maintained his innocence.
