According to Vincent Garcia, the chief editor of France Football, Cristiano Ronaldo, the captain of Al-Nassr, was not included as a nominee for the 2023 Ballon d’Or award.
The highly anticipated 67th annual ceremony will be held at the Theatre du Chatelet in France on Monday evening.
Unlike previous years, this award will honor the player who performed best during the 2022-2023 season, rather than the traditional calendar year.
In a surprising turn of events, Ronaldo, who has been continuously nominated since 2004, was left out of the list of thirty nominees, which includes renowned players such as Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, and Kylian Mbappe.
“Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence was not a topic of discussion within the committee,” Garcia told (via Sports Brief).
“He did not shine in the World Cup and played in a tournament with less visibility, yet he is still a great player.”
