The national grid has been shut down by electricity workers resulting to a blackout following an indefinite strike declared by organized labour unions.
The spokesperson for Transmission Company of Nigeria, Ndidi Mbah, confirmed on Tuesday.
The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) complied with the directives of the Nigeria Labour Congress to withdraw their services, resulting in a nationwide blackout around 11:20 am on Monday.
The blackout is also being experienced in the Federal Capital Territory and its surroundings.
Despite a court order restraining the unions from going on strike, the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress announced a nationwide indefinite strike starting Tuesday.
The Presidency has condemned the strike action by the unions, stating that it is a blatant disregard for the court order and a lack of respect.
Accordingly, the government expressed displeasure that the nation’s economy and social activities should not suffer because of the personal interest of any labour leader.
