At the Mindanao State University (MSU) in Marawi, Philippines, a tragic incident occurred during a Catholic Mass, resulting in the loss of three lives and leaving nine people injured.
According to the BBC, the explosion happened on Sunday morning within a gymnasium.
It is important to note that Marawi was previously a site of conflict between government forces and militants affiliated with the Islamic State in 2017.
In light of this recent event, the university has increased security measures on campus and temporarily suspended all academic activities until further notice.
The university expressed deep sadness and shock at the incomprehensible and terrifying act of violence.
“Violence has no place in a civilized society, and it is particularly abhorrent in an institution of higher learning like MSU,” it said.
“We stand in solidarity with our Christian community and all those affected by this tragedy.”
