At 69, Prevost makes history as the first Pope born in the United States, a milestone for American Catholics and the global Church alike.

He takes over from Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88.

Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Pope Leo XIV is a member of the Order of St. Augustine and is known for his calm yet decisive leadership, strong theological background, and international pastoral experience.
