Meek Mill to donate 10% of earnings to combat gun violence in Philadelphia

Meek Mill is looking to collaborate with the city of Philadelphia to donate 10% of his music earnings towards combating gun violence in his hometown.

Following the tragic death of local rapper Phat Geez, Meek took to Twitter to express his desire to sign a contract committing to this cause.

Despite the positive intentions behind his announcement, DJ Akademiks criticized Meek for the violent lyrics in his music.

“Ima do a public contract with the city of Philadelphia where 10% of my music earnings go to the city of Philadelphia to combat gun violence in our city… ima start this movement! PIP PHAT GEEZ. I wanna do in contract the city of Philadelphia!” Meek wrote on Twitter.

In response, Akademiks fired back:

“Rap about Gun Violence to increase violence in the inner cities by 400% then pledge a measly 10% of your earnings from said rapping to combat the same violence your music just promoted… Wow this guy is a saint..”

Phat Geez was fatally shot in Philadelphia on Sunday night when a passenger in a vehicle fired at him. No arrests have been made in connection with the crime, and a $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the apprehension of the suspect.

On Monday,Meek Mill also spoke out about the issues facing the city, labeling it as a “terrible place for black people to live” and expressing sorrow over the frequent instances of death that he witnesses.
