Following his resignation from Brighton, Olympique Marseille has formally named Roberto De Zerbi as their new head coach.
The Ligue 1 team and the Italian tactician have agreed to a three-year deal.
Before spending a brief time with Shakhtar Donetsk, which was cut short by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, De Zerbi, 45, rose to prominence as a coach at Sassuolo.
After that, in September 2022, he moved to Brighton, where he helped the team qualify for Europe for the first time and make it to the Europa League quarterfinals before Roma eliminated them.
Upon his official appointment, De Zerbi expressed excitement about his new role.
“I am excited to join Olympique Marseille and look forward to the challenges ahead,” he said. “This is a club with a rich history and passionate supporters.”
Marseille President Pablo Longoria pointed at De Zerbi’s track record of developing teams and achieving success.
“Roberto De Zerbi has demonstrated his ability to elevate teams to new heights,” Longoria stated. “We believe he is the right fit to lead Marseille into a new era.”
