I have no religion, worship no deity – Soyinka

Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, expressed surprise at the idea of living until 90 years during the 2024 edition of his International Cultural Exchange Programme at his ARI residence in Ijegba, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Soyinka shared that his decision to become a writer was driven by a desire to correct misconceptions from stories he heard while growing up.

He criticized Nigerians for always blaming the State, while failing to reflect on their own actions.

Speaking the reason he broke into a radio station during the military era, Prof Soyinka said: “I never broke into a radio station, but sneaked in. The radio station was holding on to something that belonged to the people, and I decided to retrieve it. If that item had been played, it would have demoralized the people and established the culture of brutality.”

The renowned author emphasized that crimes like kidnapping and robbery stem from selfishness and a craving for a luxurious lifestyle, rather than poverty or inequality.
