Onyeka Nwelue Credits Wole Soyinka For Helping Him Secure Japan Residency

Author and filmmaker Onyeka Nwelue has revealed that Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka played a significant role in helping him secure permanent residency in Japan.

In a series of posts on X on Sunday, Onyeka explained that Soyinka served as his guarantor during the residency process, describing the gesture as life-changing.

“With the support of the greatest literary mind in Africa, I have become a resident of the greatest nation on earth, Japan. I remain indebted to this man till my last day on earth,” he wrote.

He also reflected on his personal journey and family background, suggesting that his father had long accepted that other influential figures would play a major role in shaping his life.

“My father realized quite early that there is another man who could do for me, the things he couldn’t do for me. He didn’t fight it. He accepted his fate,” he added.

As part of the application process, Soyinka reportedly wrote an official letter in April 2025 endorsing Onyeka’s stay in Japan and vouching for his purpose in the country.

In the letter, Soyinka introduced him as a cultural visitor and assured the authorities of his conduct.

“It is with great pleasure that I introduce the novelist and film director, Mr. Onyeka Nwelue, as a bona fide visitor to Japan in promotion of his artistic preoccupations. I stand guarantor for his stated mission in Japan, and his compliance with Japanese laws and socio cultural norms,” Soyinka wrote.

He also described Onyeka as a responsible professional and highlighted their past collaborations.

“I have collaborated with him on a number of projects and affirm him to be a responsible individual and committed professional,” he added.

Onyeka further noted that Soyinka’s support extended beyond formal endorsement, recalling how the literary icon also assisted in promoting his book The Beginning of Everything Colourful, even posing for photographs for publicity purposes.

According to him, the book, which explores themes connected to Japan, helped deepen his ties with the country, including engagement with the Japanese Embassy in Abuja.

He also emphasised the importance of appreciating people while they are alive, stating that recognition should not be reserved for posthumous tributes.

Wole Soyinka, a Nobel Prize winner in Literature and one of Africa’s most respected intellectuals, continues to be widely recognised for his contributions to Literature, education and cultural advocacy.
