WAEC/JAMB: National Assembly to conduct public hearing over age controversy

JUST IN: NASS passes N2.17 trillion 2023 Supplementary Budget

The National Assembly has announced plans to hold a public hearing in response to the controversy surrounding the Federal Government’s proposal to set the age limit for WASSCE candidates at 18 years.

Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, disclosed this on Sunday.

The decision has sparked further criticism, with former Vice President Abubakar Atiku and CSOs labeling it as outdated and oppressive.

They are calling for the government to reconsider the decision and convene a meeting with education stakeholders.

The Senate has also pledged to hold a public hearing on the matter when it is brought before them.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu (APC, Ekiti South), said: “The Senate will consider, through it’s relevant committee, public views on any government policy brought to our legislative notice. Whatever is brought to the Senate for constitutional and statutory stamps shall be subjected to legislative crucible which includes public hearings.”
