Uncle Waffles, a South African phenomenon, has broken down barriers once further, becoming the first black woman to headline a show at New York’s famed Brooklyn Mirage. This achievement is a personal milestone and a watershed moment for the am-a-piano genre, as she is the first am-a-piano artist to perform at the prestigious venue.
The night celebrated African greatness and amapiano’s global ascension, with Uncle Waffles giving an outstanding performance that captivated fans and music lovers alike. Following the great event, she took to Instagram to express her appreciation and reflect on the occasion’s significance.
“The first black woman to headline Brooklyn Mirage. The first Piano artist and many more to come! What do I even say? So much to share, thank you, New York, for helping me create history despite the weather. I cannot express how grateful I am. Thank you Amazon Music for helping me share this in the world! To the @brooklynmirage thank you for being so amazing and choosing me! To the dancers, my team, thank you for riding so hard for this dream! Thank you guys so much,” Uncle Waffles wrote.
This groundbreaking achievement follows closely on the heels of another historic moment for Uncle Waffles. Earlier in July, she became the first DJ to headline and perform on the main stage at Wireless Fest, where she proudly represented amapiano. Reflecting on this accomplishment, she shared on Instagram, “Only DJ headliner & first DJ to play main stage in 8 years. Only amapiano act too. I know there are soooo many more to come! Thank you @wirelessfest baaaeeeeeee omggggggggg So much to shareeeeeeeeeee AMAPIANO TO THE WORLD!”
