Burkina Faso has unveiled a new biometric passport without the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) logo, as announced by Security Minister Mahamadou Sana.
This change comes after Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali cut ties with ECOWAS following sanctions for recent military coups.
ECOWAS has condemned the decision, claiming it hinders regional mobility and commerce.
Minister Sana justified the logo removal as a result of Burkina Faso’s withdrawal from the organization, originally declared in January.
Sana stated, “On this passport, there’s no ECOWAS logo, and no mention of either. Since January, Burkina Faso has decided to withdraw from this body, and this is just a realization of the action already taken by Burkina Faso.”
