Nicki Minaj recently revealed that despite spending decades in the United States and paying “millions” in taxes, she is still not a U.S. citizen.
The rap superstar opened up during a TikTok Live session, reflecting on her immigration status. Minaj, who immigrated from Trinidad and Tobago as a child, expressed her surprise that her financial contributions to the country haven’t led to honorary citizenship.
“I’m not a citizen of America. Isn’t that crazy?” she remarked, adding that her citizenship remains elusive despite the vast amount she’s paid in taxes.
Minaj has been vocal about her immigrant experience, notably criticizing the Trump administration’s border policies in 2018.
“I came to this country as an illegal immigrant @ 5 years old,” she wrote at the time. “I can’t imagine the horror of being in a strange place & having my parents stripped away from me at the age of 5. This is so scary to me. Please stop this. Can you try to imagine the terror & panic these kids feel right now? Not knowing if their parents are dead or alive, if they’ll ever see them again… .
She spoke passionately about how she could relate to the trauma of migrant children separated from their families, drawing from her own experiences arriving in the U.S. illegally at five years old.
Nicki’s story highlights the struggles immigrants face in their pursuit of citizenship, regardless of their success or contributions to the country.
