Uber Driver Accuses House of Reps Member Alex Ikwechegh of Assault

The Abia federal lawmaker who physically assaulted an Abuja Bolt driver, Alex Ikwechegh, is set to appear before the Kuje Magistrate Court at 12 noon today, Wednesday.

The investigation and prosecution of Ikwechegh are being carried out by the Special Investigation Unit of the Inspector General of Police.

The lawmaker, who represents Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State, was caught on camera assaulting the Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, in a viral video.

The incident happened on October 27 while the driver was delivering a package to the lawmaker at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja.

Since the incident, Nigerians have expressed outrage and disapproval of the lawmaker’s behavior.

In response, he has issued an apology and pledged to cooperate with the police in their investigation. He has also shared that he is seeking counseling to address his actions.

In a statement, activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju said, “We are on our way to Kuje Magistrate Court for the arraignment of the honourable member who assaulted our client, Mr. Steven, a Bolt driver. The IGP’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is in charge of the investigation and prosecution.

“The media is invited to cover the arraignment, which is scheduled for 12 pm today at Kuje Magistrate.”
