Rivers LG poll: Threat to shed blood, burn down state not acceptable — IGP Egbetokun warns Fubara

Inspector General of police, IGP Egbetokun

Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has admonished Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State to refrain from making “unfounded allegations” against him.

He articulated that the threat to engage in violence and incinerate state property due to a local government election is intolerable to the police force.

This statement follows Governor Fubara’s assertion that Egbetokun shall be held responsible should there be a deterioration of law and order within the state.

The governor had intervened during an incident at the office of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) on the morning of Friday.

He obstructed what was purported to be an attempt by the police to confiscate materials designated for the imminent local government elections.

CREEBHILLS reports that this development arises amidst a prevailing political crisis in Rivers State concerning the forthcoming local government election scheduled for Saturday.

Nevertheless, Egbetokun, through a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, expressed his astonishment at Governor Fubara’s incursion into the RSIEC office.

Part of the statement read: “The Nigeria Police Force has noted with concern the recent statements made by the Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency Siminalayi Fubara, in which several unfounded allegations were levelled against the Office of the Inspector-General of Police and the Nigeria Police Force. In light of these claims, it has become necessary to set the record straight.

“The Nigeria Police takes exception to the unwarranted outburst of the Governor and particularly the weighty accusations which he falsely levied against the Inspector-General of Police and the entire Nigeria Police Force and advise caution and decency in the pursuit of individual political goals.
