The FBI recently raided the home of Shayne Coplan, the 26-year-old CEO of Polymarket, an online prediction market platform. The agents arrived early in the morning and seized Coplan’s electronic devices.
This raid has drawn attention due to Polymarket’s recent prediction favoring Donald Trump in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Trump was shown as a frontrunner on the platform despite conflicting public polls.
Polymarket, which allows users to place bets on various future events, including political outcomes, gained significant traction during the election. Although Coplan’s platform has been unavailable in the U.S. since 2022 due to regulatory concerns, some users reportedly accessed it via VPNs.
The raid is believed to be part of an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice into whether Polymarket improperly accepted trades from American users, which would breach gambling regulations. French regulators are also scrutinizing the platform to ensure it complies with local laws.
In response to the raid, Coplan posted a lighthearted message on social media: “new phone, who dis?” Polymarket has suggested that the raid may be politically motivated, hinting at the possibility of retribution against the platform for its election predictions.
Coplan remains confident in expanding Polymarket’s services in the U.S., especially after a recent court ruling lifted restrictions on political prediction markets in the country.
