The Zamfara State Government discovered 20 medical professionals identified as ghost workers during an ongoing verification effort to enforce the new minimum pay of N70,000 for civil officers.
Speaking at a news conference in Gusau on Wednesday, Ahmed Liman, State Head of Service and Chairman of the Workers Verification Committee, revealed that the committee discovered the ghost physicians while conducting verification checks in several sectors.
Liman indicated that the full implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage would begin once the verification process is completed, which was completed at the end of November.
In addition to the 20 ghost doctors, Liman indicated that more ghost workers from other ministries had been identified, with a full report to be released after the exercise.
He noted that Zamfara currently has a workforce of 34,000, excluding local government employees. The committee aims to ensure that an accurate and genuine workforce count is presented to the governor for wage implementation.
“I assure that, upon receiving the committee’s report, the government will approve the full implementation of the new minimum wage,” Liman said.
